Edinburgh’s nights out split roughly in two. The New Town, from George Street down through Frederick Street and Charlotte Square, is where you’ll find the bigger bars and the late-night spots, a few minutes from Princes Street. South of the Royal Mile, around Nicolson Street and the university, it’s younger and more relaxed, and Lothian Road and Tollcross fill up before and after shows at the Usher Hall and the Lyceum.
